Travel Month: April
This spring we set out to explore the diverse landscapes and captivating cities of Spain. Among our destinations was the picturesque city of Seville. During our stay there, we decided to take a day excursion to Gibraltar.
Gibraltar, situated at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, is a British Overseas Territory that offers a captivating blend of history, culture, and nature. It is famous for its iconic Rock, unique Barbary macaques, caves, and stunning views.
The Rock, Gibraltar
We drove approximately 2 hours from Seville to Gibraltar. Following a blog recommendation, we parked on the Spanish side for a more convenient border crossing. A brief 10-minute walk led us to the border, and we caught a public bus to the Rock. After another 10-minute walk, we took a 6-minute cable car ride to the top. Alternatively, hiking was an option, though my son was already tired from walking in the past few days.
The view from the top was simply breathtaking, with the azure Mediterranean Sea and a clear sky adding to the magic of the moment. We have heard that you can catch a glimpse of the African continent from there, but unfortunately, we couldn’t.
St. Michael’s Cave
We did a bit of a hike around and encountered numerous playful monkeys eager to snatch food from our hands or backpacks. We saw one of them actually open the zip of a backpack, take out a breakfast bar, and start to eat. Very skillful indeed!
We went to the largest cave structure in the area called the St. Michael’s Cave, which is also used for hosting various events. Inside, the cave was illuminated with color-changing lights, providing a unique and mesmerizing atmosphere. The cave has enormous stalactites and stalagmites which are quite impressive.
Since it was Sunday, public transport options were limited, and we had to wait quite a while before finally getting a taxi to the border. Most shops and cafes were closed in the central plaza, but luckily, we found a few restaurants that were open on our way back. After spending around 6-7 hours exploring the place and having 20000 steps count, we made our way back to Seville, Spain. Check out my post on Spain.
Some Travel Tips:
- Check if you need a visa to enter the country.
- If you travel on Sunday, it will be less crowded, but a lot of services will be closed.
- If you travel on Sunday, park your car in Gibraltar.
- The other option is to go there with a tour operator.
